Cabinet Door Styles & Finishes Explained

The door is what you see and touch every day — it sets the entire mood of the kitchen. Here’s how to think about styles and finishes without the jargon.

Door styles

  • Shaker. A clean five-piece door with a recessed flat center panel. It’s the most popular style in America right now for a reason: it fits everything from farmhouse to modern, and it never looks dated. Most of our line is Shaker.
  • Raised panel. A center panel that’s raised with a contoured profile — a more traditional, formal look.
  • Flat / slab. A single smooth panel, no frame — the most modern, minimalist option.
  • Glass-front. Great as an accent on a few upper cabinets to break up a wall and show off dishware.

Finishes

  • Painted. A solid, opaque color — crisp whites and greys are the timeless choices. Painted finishes give the cleanest, most built-in look.
  • Stained. Shows the natural wood grain through a translucent color, from light naturals to deep espresso. Warm and classic; hides wear well.
  • Glazed. A stain or paint with an extra glaze worked into the profiles and corners for depth and an aged, hand-finished character.

How to choose

  1. Start with the mood. Bright and airy? Lean painted white or light grey. Warm and cozy? A natural or medium stain. Bold and dramatic? Deep espresso or a dark grey.
  2. Look at your fixed elements. Floors, countertops, and wall color are your anchors — pick a cabinet finish that complements them, not fights them.
  3. Think about upkeep. Very dark and very light finishes both show more (dust on dark, smudges on white). Mid-tones are the most forgiving day to day.
  4. Consider two tones. A different finish on the island from the perimeter is a popular way to add interest without overdoing it.
Our line: we carry nine finishes — from bright Aspen White and classic White Shaker to warm Hickory, rich Bristol Chocolate, bold Espresso, and several greys. Browse them all on our Styles page.
